DIY Protein Soda: The $1 Version of a $3.33 Can

Canned protein soda runs 13 to 33 cents per gram of protein. Clear whey isolate powder runs about 4 to 6 cents. The can is paying for convenience and carbonation, and you can replicate both at home in ninety seconds if you know the one rule everybody learns the hard way: never shake protein powder with anything carbonated.

What You Need

The Method (Foam-Free)

  1. Mix the powder flat first. Shake one scoop of clear whey with 4 to 6 oz of plain still water in the shaker. It will foam; that's fine here.
  2. Let it sit 3 to 5 minutes. Clear whey foam collapses on its own and the liquid turns transparent. Skipping the rest is the #1 cause of a bad texture.
  3. Pour the concentrate into a glass over ice.
  4. Top slowly with 8 to 10 oz of cold sparkling water, poured down the side of the glass. Stir once, gently. Done: roughly 25g of protein, fizzy, clear, about a dollar of ingredients.

Flavor Upgrades That Cost Nothing

A squeeze of fresh lime or grapefruit sharpens the acidity the same way Waay's flavor chemists do it and shortens any sweetener aftertaste. A splash of tart cherry juice adds a few calories and turns lemonade-flavor whey into cherry limeade. For a root beer angle, a drop or two of root beer extract in the still-water stage gets surprisingly close to the canned stuff.

Honest Limits of DIY

The cans still win on three things: carbonation strength (home versions go flatter because you can't pressure-seal protein), zero prep, and portability. If your use case is the glove box or the gym bag, keep a case of Bucked Up or Don't Quit! around and use DIY at home. Mixed strategy, lowest total cost.

The math: a 5 lb tub of clear whey isolate makes roughly 60+ servings. Versus a daily $3.33 can, DIY at home saves in the neighborhood of $700 a year at one serving a day. That buys a lot of SodaStream.
